The Hidden Dangers: How AI Impacts Mental Health
Artificial intelligence has become very popular over the years. Everybody has access to AI and that has given people the opportunity to use it in any capacity they so choose. Although there are some benefits to using AI such as mood tracking, guided meditation, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) exercises, there are also some disadvantages.
As AI advances in automating tasks, concerns of job security are brought to the forefront. Constant worry about being replaced by AI or having to keep up with technological changes can cause chronic stress. Chronic stress can contribute to anxiety disorders and depression which can lead to becoming emotionally unstable. Managing your stress is important when trying to better your mental health.
Reduced human connection is another concern that AI brings into question in regards to how it would affect one’s mental health. In February 2024, Megan Garcia’s 14-year-old son, Sewell Setzer III, died by suicide. When news broke of this incident it was revealed that her son was participating in a sexual relationship with a chatbot on Character.AI. Garcia released text messages and topics of crucifixion and peaceful ways to die were also revealed in these messages. Hence, Garcia believes that Character AI was responsible for influencing her son to take his own life. This unfortunate incident raised many questions about the safety of AI chatbots and the age restrictions. In October 2024, Garcia began her lawsuit against Character AI.
In conclusion, while AI offers a range of benefits that can enhance productivity, learning, and even mental health management, it also poses significant risks that cannot be ignored. Ensuring ethical AI use, promoting open dialogue about its effects, and fostering human connection will be key to navigating this new digital age responsibly.
