How to Protect Your Mental Health During the Holidays

The holidays brings people together from all walks of life and it’s a time to celebrate with your family and friends. Although many people love to celebrate for the holidays not everyone has family or friends to celebrate with. The holidays can be a time of stress and difficult conversations for many. For some, it’s a period of grieving, as the absence of those we’ve lost can feel especially heavy. During the holidays it’s important to protect your mental health, here are some ways to do so.

Set boundaries: Remember that it’s okay to say ‘no’. During the holiday season, many people feel a strong desire to help those around them and end up saying yes to commitments they don’t truly want to make, all because they don’t want to let anyone down. This is completely understandable, but you should never feel obligated to do something you don’t want to do.

Manage finances: Between traveling, hosting events, and buying gifts, the holiday season can be very expensive. During this season it’s important to not overspend if you can’t afford it. Try to manage your finances as best to your ability so you don’t feel anxiety or pressure to spend. Remember your presence is what’s important, as long as you show up for your loved ones that’s all that matters.

Limit social media use: Comparison is the thief of joy and sometimes people find themselves comparing their holiday festivities to other people on social media. Your plans for the holidays do not have to look like other people’s plans, as long as you enjoy your time with your loved ones you’ll have a successful holiday season.

By implementing these strategies, you can protect your mental health and enjoy a more balanced, fulfilling holiday season. Remember, taking care of yourself is a priority, and it's okay to seek help when needed.
